The 46th East African
Community (EAC) Council of Ministers Meeting at the Expert level has kicked off
in Arusha as a preparatory session for the main meeting scheduled for November
28, 2024.
The expert meeting
addresses a range of critical issues related to the EAC integration agenda.
These discussions will be presented at the Permanent Secretaries meeting for
further deliberations, before being forwarded to the Ministerial level.
Key topics under review
include progress on previous Council of Ministers’ decisions, reports from the
EAC Secretary General’s Office, and discussions on customs, trade, financial
issues, infrastructure, production sectors, social issues, and political
matters within the region.
The expert meeting is
being led by Mr. Haji Janabi, Director of the Monitoring and Evaluation Unit at
Tanzania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, on behalf
of South Sudan, the current chair, who is participating virtually.
The expert-level
meeting runs from November 22-25, 2024, followed by the Permanent Secretaries
meeting on November 26. The 46th Council of Ministers meeting will take place
on November 27-28, where the agendas from the Permanent Secretaries will be
discussed. The final decisions from the Council of Ministers will be presented
at the Heads of State Summit on November 30, 2024, for approval and
implementation.
The eight EAC member
states—Burundi, Kenya, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Somalia, South
Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda—are all participating in the discussions.
