The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Dr. Doto Biteko (pictured), has today November 29, 2024, called on the African Association of Maritime Transport Regulatory Authorities (AAMTRA) to strengthen collaboration and unity to enhance maritime safety and drive economic development across member nations.

Speaking at the opening of the Annual Conference of African Maritime Transport Regulatory Authorities, held in Dar es Salaam, Dr. Biteko emphasized the importance of using the three-day event as a platform to devise new strategies for success in the sector.

“This conference is an opportunity to set clear goals that prioritize improved safety and resilience in maritime transport. Collaborative dialogue and action are key to overcoming the challenges we face,” he stated.

Dr. Biteko’s remarks were echoed by Tanzania’s Minister of Transport, Professor Makame Mbarawa, who highlighted the significance of investing in human capital, particularly youth, as a cornerstone for building sustainability in maritime transport.

He also highlighted Tanzania’s achievements in the sector, including significant infrastructure projects like the modernization of the Dar es Salaam Port and the construction of the Electric Railway connecting Dar es Salaam, Morogoro, and Dodoma.

“These initiatives not only improve transport efficiency but also contribute to reducing carbon emissions, ensuring that our growth aligns with global environmental goals,” said Professor Mbarawa.

The Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Mr. Arsenio Dominguez, commended Tanzania for hosting the conference, stating that the country's efforts demonstrate its commitment to improving the maritime sector. He reaffirmed the IMO's dedication to fostering international cooperation and addressing challenges in maritime safety, gender equality, and environmental conservation.

“Tanzania’s leadership is evident through its continued investment in the maritime sector, and the IMO will remain a steadfast partner in supporting these efforts,” said Dominguez.

Representing the Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner, Ilala District Commissioner Edward Mpogolo extended gratitude to President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan for the government’s transformative efforts in enhancing port operations.

“Improvements at the Dar es Salaam Port have eliminated congestion, allowing for the smooth loading and unloading of cargo. We are deeply thankful to the President for this progress,” Mpogolo stated.

The conference brings together maritime regulators, policymakers, and industry stakeholders from across Africa to address pressing issues, share best practices, and forge a united path forward for the continent’s maritime sector.
