Government commits to expanding clean cooking energy access

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals has today 22nd October, 2024 expressed satisfaction with the Ministry of Energy's efforts to enhance the country's energy sector. 

The comes after the Ministry, through its agencies, including the Rural Energy Agency (Rea) and the Tanesco subsidiary for Construction and Rehabilitation of Transmission and Distribution Infrastructure (ETDCO), presented their performance reports.

Mr. Mathayo, a committee member, praised the government's commitment to its Clean Cooking Energy Strategy, aimed at achieving 80% clean cooking energy access by 2034. He also commended the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Dr. Biteko, for overseeing the ETDCO company.

Notably, ETDCO's Tabora to Katavi power transmission line project is 80% complete, promising to connect Katavi to the national grid upon its finalization. Another major project, the Tabora to Urambo transmission line, has also reached 80% completion, improving electricity access for Urambo and nearby regions.

Deputy Minister of Energy, Ms. Judith Kapinga, applauded the Committee for its contributions and emphasized the Ministry's focus on completing electricity projects on time. 

She also reiterated the government’s commitment to expanding access to clean cooking energy. Ms. Kapinga stressed the need for a shift in public mindset, highlighting the availability of efficient electric stoves in addition to gas stoves.

Mr. Felchesmi Mramba, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, noted that the Clean Cooking Energy Strategy is in its early stages, having launched in June, with ongoing discussions about installing meters on gas cylinders.

The government remains dedicated to ensuring that more Tanzanians have access to modern and sustainable energy solutions.
