On World Pharmacists Day, Chief Government Pharmacist Daudi Msasi delivered a powerful message about the indispensable role pharmacists play in healthcare. He highlighted their vital contributions in ensuring access to essential medicines, medical supplies, and diagnostic tests.

This annual celebration, observed on September 25, 2024, aims to enhance public awareness of pharmacists' impact on health and wellness across communities. Msasi stated, “Pharmacists are instrumental in promoting disease prevention through vaccinations, health screenings, and patient education.

Their expertise enhances public health initiatives and ensures effective medication management.” He urged pharmacists to take the lead in medication oversight, particularly regarding the safety and efficacy of antibiotics and other medications.

“It’s crucial to provide proper guidelines on the use of medications to avoid the development of drug resistance due to misuse,” he added. Boniface Magige, the Registrar of the Pharmacy Council of Tanzania, called on pharmacists and pharmacy owners to refrain from dispensing medications without a doctor's prescription, warning that such practices contribute to the growing problem of drug resistance and endanger public health.

Magige further advised Tanzanians to avoid self-medicating without medical guidance, stating, “Improper use of medications can lead to ineffective treatments and serious health risks. Those who operate pharmacies without following regulations will face severe consequences.” The Pharmacy Council also cautioned against purchasing drugs from unregistered shops, as the quality and accuracy of information provided can be compromised, posing risks to consumers.

Magige concluded by emphasizing that the Pharmacy Council, under the Ministry of Health, is dedicated to educating the public about the proper use of medications, stressing the importance of thorough examinations and professional advice before drug use.

Adonis Bitegeko, Manager of the Eastern Zone of the Tanzania Medicines and Medical Devices Authority (TMDA), reinforced the authority’s commitment to combating drug resistance and educating communities to ensure the correct and safe use of medications according to professional guidelines.

“The TMDA is responsible for safeguarding public health by ensuring the quality and safety of medicines and medical devices,” he stated, highlighting their role in monitoring and regulating the registration, importation, and distribution of pharmaceutical products.

As the world marks World Pharmacists Day 2024, it is crucial to address the alarming rise in drug resistance and the increasing tendency for individuals to self-medicate without professional consultation.

This year's theme, “Pharmacists Meet Global Health Needs,” underscores the importance of pharmacists in enhancing the health of individuals and communities. The day serves as a reminder of the invaluable contributions pharmacists make and the critical need for the appropriate use of medications.
