Mbinga. Mbinga Town Council (MTC) met 100 percent of its own source revenue collection target in the 2023/24 financial year on the back of a strong revenue collection team and improved compliance.
Mbinga Town acting director, Dr. Kung’e Nyamuryekung’e on Monday (July 15) said that in the 2023/24 fiscal year, the Council garnered Sh2.5 billion, the same amount of which was projected to be collected during the period under review.
This suggests that MTC was collecting an average of Sh0.21 billion on the monthly basis.
“We have met the annual revenue collection target of Sh2.5 billion, driven by strong revenue collection team and improved compliance,” asserted Dr. Nyamuryekung’e.
He went on to expound that of the Sh2.5 billion, some Sh1.8 billion are own source proper revenue and Sh0.7 billion are own source protected revenue.
MTC’s major revenue sources include maize and coffee crop cess, business licenses, rent, service levies, sale of plots, beans crop cess, refuse collection service fees and parking fees.
Mbinga District Commissioner Hon. Kisare Matiku Makori on Monday commended the MTC’s management for hitting the revenue collection target.
“You nailed it. Keep the momentum going,” applauded Hon. Makori.
He went further to say: “You are filled to the brim with potential and you have the key to unlocking it all.”
In a swift rejoinder, MTC chairperson Hon. Kelvin Mapunda promised to work closely with the Council’s management in ensuring that they came up with new revenue sources.
This, he added, will boost revenue collection and shape the Council.
“We will be more robust in identifying untapped areas of revenue collection to not only enhance Mbinga Town Council’s tax base, but also make it a better functioning entity,” vowed Hon. Mapunda.
