Mpina says Lissu verdict could shape Tanzania’s political future

By The Respondents Reporter

ACT Wazalendo Shadow Deputy Prime Minister Luhaga Joelson Mpina has described the expected court verdict in the treason case against CHADEMA Chairman Tundu Lissu as a significant moment that could influence the direction of Tanzania’s politics.

Mpina said the ruling, scheduled for tomorrow, would be closely watched because of its potential implications for multiparty democracy and political developments in the country.

Speaking today ahead of the judgment, Mpina said he had never witnessed what he termed such a high level of injustice against a political party since Tanzania reintroduced multiparty politics in 1992 and held its first multiparty elections in 1995.

He cited restrictions on CHADEMA’s political activities and the treason case against its chairman, who has spent more than a year in detention, as examples of what he described as unfair treatment of the opposition party.

Mpina said he believed the charges against Lissu lacked merit, expressing hope that the court would deliver justice and ensure a fair outcome.

He added that he was praying for Lissu, saying the outcome of the case was important not only to the CHADEMA leader but also to the wider interests of Tanzanians.

Mpina appealed to God to guide the proceedings and ensure that Lissu receives justice as the country awaits the court's decision.

The case has attracted public and political attention, with the anticipated verdict expected to be an important development in Tanzania’s ongoing political and democratic discourse.
