Police in Dar es Salaam arrested 67 suspects in October over various criminal offences, including armed robbery, fraud and sexual offences, as authorities reported progress in crime prevention and prosecution.
The arrests also led to the recovery of several items suspected to have been stolen or used in criminal activities, including three motorcycles allegedly linked to a series of robberies.
According to a statement issued by the Dar es Salaam Special Police Zone, four suspects, led by Abrahaman Suleiman, alias Bunda, a resident of Mtoni Kijichi in Mbagala, were arrested over allegations of robbing motorcycle owners using traditional weapons, including knives and machetes.
Police said the suspects were found with three motorcycles: a TVS with registration number MC 429 FZS, a Sinoray bearing registration number MC 295 FZH and an unregistered Yamaha.
In a separate operation, police arrested Azizi Joachim, alias Mabewa, a resident of Kivule, and five others.
They were allegedly found in possession of a machine used to erase and reinstall operating systems on mobile phones and computers.
The equipment raises concerns about the possible misuse of technology in activities involving mobile phones and computer systems.
Police also arrested Eugen Justine, a resident of Mbezi Chini, and three others over allegations of defrauding people around banking facilities by using fake minerals.
The arrests were announced alongside the ongoing 'Talk to the Commander' campaign, through which police are seeking to strengthen cooperation with residents in identifying and addressing security challenges in their communities.
The initiative provides an opportunity for citizens to report concerns and discuss local security problems with police officers.
Beyond the arrests, police reported that nine suspects had been convicted in separate criminal cases prosecuted through the force's prosecution office.
The sentences included life imprisonment for Swaibu Issa, alias Mpili, a resident of Kigamboni, convicted of sodomy by Kigamboni District Court.
Michael Pius, alias Wakudada, from Mzizima in Kigamboni, received a 30-year prison sentence for armed robbery, while Abdulswamad Shabani, a resident of Kimara, was sentenced to 30 years for rape by Ubungo District Court.
Sebastian Gabriel, alias Mnyetu, from Kifuru, was also sentenced to 30 years for armed robbery by the same court.
In other cases, Saidi Suleiman Saidi, from Mbagala, received a 20-year sentence for indecent assault, while Mustapha Seif, alias Mwangia, from Buza, was sentenced to 30 years for rape.
Jofrey Richard, a resident of Kawe, was sentenced to life imprisonment for sodomy by Kinondoni District Court.
Temeke District Court sentenced Elias Shukurani, alias Lupia, from Mbande, to 30 years for armed robbery, while Mohamed Hamisi Mohamed, also from Mbande, received a life sentence for sodomy.
Meanwhile, police said they were monitoring groups allegedly mobilising people from within and outside Dar es Salaam to travel to the city on November 6, 2026, over suspected plans to cause disturbances, violence or sabotage.
The force warned that it would take legal action against individuals or groups found to be involved in activities aimed at disrupting public peace.
It said it would not tolerate any signs of lawlessness and pledged to respond promptly to threats to security.
Police also urged members of the public to respect established court procedures when following up on cases, emphasising the importance of allowing judicial processes to take their course.
