Tanzania’s weather agency warned on Tuesday that a low-pressure system in the Indian Ocean could develop into a tropical cyclone within four days as it moves towards the country’s coast, potentially bringing increased rainfall from Oct. 24.
The system was located near the Seychelles Islands, about 1,600 kilometres (994 miles) from Tanzania’s coast, the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) said in a public notice.
The agency said the system was expected to intensify into a tropical cyclone while moving westward towards Tanzania, increasing the likelihood of enhanced rainfall along coastal areas and nearby regions.
TMA advised maritime users and the public to monitor official weather forecasts and updates and seek guidance from relevant experts.
The authority said it would continue tracking the system’s development and issue further updates as necessary.
The notice did not specify the cyclone’s expected intensity or identify areas likely to receive the heaviest rainfall.
