Tanzania to reopen embassy in Angola after 47-year gap

Tanzania will reopen its embassy in Angola in a move aimed at strengthening diplomatic ties and improving coordination of economic and other areas of cooperation between the two countries.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan announced the decision on Thursday, October 29, 2026, following official talks with Angolan President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, who is in Tanzania on a state visit.

President Samia said she had informed her counterpart of the decision and that she would appoint an ambassador in the coming period to oversee the mission and coordinate bilateral engagements.

The reopening is expected to provide a permanent diplomatic channel for addressing shared interests, following up on bilateral agreements and identifying new areas of cooperation.

President Samia said Tanzania's relationship with Angola was built on the historical ties established by the two countries' founding leaders, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere and Dr Agostinho Neto, during Angola's struggle for independence.

Angola gained independence in 1975, with Tanzania among the African countries that supported liberation movements on the continent.

She said successive leaders had maintained the relationship, while commending President Lourenço for his efforts to strengthen cooperation between the two countries.

The visit is particularly significant as it is the first state visit by an Angolan President to Tanzania in approximately 47 years, since President Neto visited the country in 1979.

President Samia expressed optimism that reopening the embassy would strengthen communication between the two governments and provide a stronger foundation for implementing agreements reached in various areas of cooperation.

The move also signals renewed efforts to translate the historical political relationship between Tanzania and Angola into practical cooperation.

With a resident diplomatic mission, the two countries are expected to improve the coordination of government engagements and follow up on commitments aimed at advancing their shared interests.
