Tanzania has begun reviewing detailed architectural designs and tender documents for the proposed headquarters of the East African Health Research Commission (EAHRC), as preparations advance for the construction of the regional institution.

The review brings together experts from the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, the Zanzibar Ministry of Health and other health sector stakeholders to assess the technical requirements of the project and consolidate the country’s recommendations ahead of regional discussions.

The meeting, held at the Ministry of Health offices in Mtumba, Dodoma, on October 22, 2026, aims to ensure that Tanzania’s technical views are incorporated into the project before the next stages of implementation.

Dr Michael Kiremeji, an emergency medicine specialist at the Ministry of Health, said the exercise was important in ensuring that the proposed designs and tender documents meet the required technical standards and procedures.

He said the review would also give experts an opportunity to identify gaps and propose improvements before Tanzania presents its position at the Regional Experts Steering Committee (RESC) meeting.

“The review is important in ensuring that Tanzania’s professional views are taken into account and that preparations for construction follow acceptable standards and procedures,” Dr Kiremeji said.

The exercise follows resolutions from the East African Community (EAC) Council of Ministers of Health meeting held in Arusha from October 1 to 6, 2026, which directed the EAHRC, in collaboration with partner states, to review the architectural designs and tender documents for the proposed headquarters.

Dr Kiremeji said the consultations would help establish a common understanding among the participating institutions and ensure that Tanzania’s recommendations reflect the technical requirements of the project and the broader interests of regional cooperation.

He added that the discussions would focus on issues requiring expert assessment, with the recommendations expected to inform subsequent decisions on the project.

Upon completion of the review, Tanzania’s position and proposals will be presented at the RESC meeting as part of the regional process to advance preparations for the headquarters.

The proposed facility is linked to wider East African efforts to strengthen cooperation in health research, improve coordination among partner states and support the generation and use of scientific evidence to address shared health challenges.

The EAHRC serves as a regional institution responsible for coordinating and promoting health research within the East African Community. Its work supports collaboration among researchers and institutions across member states, with the broader objective of strengthening evidence-based responses to public health challenges.

The review of the designs and tender documents represents an important preparatory stage, allowing partner states to assess the technical proposals before the project proceeds further.

However, details on the estimated construction cost, implementation timetable and the anticipated completion date were not provided in the information released by the Ministry of Health.
