Deputy Minister for Energy Salome Makamba has credited Parliament with playing an important oversight role in the implementation of the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project (JNHPP), which has been completed and is now generating 2,115 megawatts (MW) of electricity.
Ms Makamba made the remarks in Parliament while responding to a question from Mwera MP Suleiman Mohamed Rashid, who sought clarification on when the government would complete the long-awaited project.
She said the project reached 100 per cent completion on February 23, 2025, before being officially inaugurated by President Samia Suluhu Hassan on August 22, 2026.
According to the deputy minister, all generating units at the facility are now operational, producing a combined 2,115MW that is fed into the national electricity grid in line with the country's power demand.
Ms Makamba used the response to acknowledge Parliament's contribution to the project's implementation, praising lawmakers for their role in monitoring its progress until completion.
The project is one of Tanzania's major investments in electricity generation, with its output expected to strengthen the country's power supply capacity and support growing demand from households, businesses and industries.
