Residents of Mwanza Region are being prepared to participate in discussions on the proposed East African Community (EAC) Political Confederation, following a public awareness exercise aimed at helping citizens understand the draft constitution and contribute their views.
The initiative, led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, brought together regional and district government leaders, business representatives, religious institutions, civil society organisations, youth, women and persons with disabilities.
The exercise was officially launched by Mwanza Regional Commissioner CP Salum Rashid Hamduni, marking another step towards ensuring that different groups in society are informed about the proposed political framework and the process leading to its establishment.
Through the initiative, stakeholders received information about the contents of the Draft Constitution of the EAC Political Confederation, its significance and the steps involved in the process.
The awareness campaign is also intended to prepare citizens to submit their opinions and recommendations when the formal public consultation process begins.
For citizens, the exercise provides an opportunity to better understand the proposed confederation and prepare to take part in discussions about the future of regional integration.
The participation of groups such as young people, women, business communities and persons with disabilities is intended to ensure that a broad range of perspectives can be represented during the consultation process.
The initiative forms part of the Tanzanian Government’s efforts to promote public awareness and participation in the journey towards the proposed EAC Political Confederation.
The Ministry’s delegation was led by the Director of Political, Defence and Security Affairs, Mwanamridu Amiry Jumaa.
As the process moves forward, public understanding and participation will be important in enabling citizens to share their views and recommendations through the official consultation channels.
