Mbinga targets higher coffee output as Kapinga distributes coffee seeds

Mbinga is stepping up efforts to increase coffee production after Minister for Industry and Trade Judith Kapinga handed over 1,000 kilogrammes of coffee seeds to 20 farmer cooperatives and one group to support the production of 3.5 million seedlings.

The initiative is expected to expand the area under coffee cultivation and increase earnings for farmers, while strengthening the crop’s contribution to the district economy.

Ms Kapinga, who is also the Mbinga Rural MP, handed over the seeds on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, during a visit to Mbinga District.

She said coffee remained the backbone of the local economy, with the district producing 18,000 tonnes during the previous season.

Mbinga had set a target of 19,000 tonnes for the current season, but production has already exceeded that figure even before the season ends, she said.

“The distribution of these seeds is aimed at increasing coffee production, which will in turn improve the economic wellbeing of Mbinga residents and increase revenue for the council,” Ms Kapinga said.

The seeds will be used by the 20 AMCOS and one farmer group to establish coffee nurseries and produce seedlings for distribution to farmers.

The move comes as Mbinga seeks to build on its position as one of Tanzania’s major coffee-producing areas, with increased production offering farmers an opportunity to raise household incomes while expanding the district’s agricultural economy.

Beyond increasing output, the expansion of coffee farming could also strengthen the wider value chain by creating demand for farm inputs, processing, transport and other services linked to the crop.

The initiative is therefore expected to support both farmers and the local economy as the district seeks to sustain growth in coffee production.
