The Makuyuni Wildlife Reserve is expected to become a new tourism gateway following the implementation of strategic infrastructure projects aimed at diversifying attractions and improving visitor experiences ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).
Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Dr Ashatu Kijaji, said the projects, financed through the Tourism Development Levy (TDL), would improve the reserve's appeal and create opportunities to attract more visitors.
Speaking on October 25, 2026, during an inspection tour of tourism development projects at the reserve, Dr Kijaji directed officials to ensure the projects are completed on schedule.
“Makuyuni Wildlife Reserve is heading towards becoming an important gateway for tourism. These strategic investments will change the face of the reserve and make it more attractive to visitors,” she said.
She said the investment would introduce additional tourism products, allowing visitors to include Makuyuni in their travel itineraries before proceeding to other tourist destinations across the country.
“We want tourists to have more reasons to visit Makuyuni, enjoy what the reserve offers and then continue to other tourism destinations in the country,” Dr Kijaji said.
The projects include construction of a modern main entrance gate, a designated wildlife viewing facility (animal hide), a campsite and a picnic area.
Dr Kijaji said the facilities would expand the range of experiences available to visitors and increase the reserve's potential to attract different categories of tourists.
“These projects are important in diversifying our tourism products. Once completed, they will provide visitors with more opportunities to experience wildlife and enjoy the natural attractions at Makuyuni,” she said.
The investment is also part of preparations to improve tourism infrastructure ahead of Afcon 2027, which Tanzania will co-host with Kenya and Uganda.
The development is expected to strengthen the country's tourism offering by expanding the range of attractions available to visitors beyond established destinations.
However, the anticipated benefits will depend on timely completion of the projects and the reserve's ability to attract visitors through quality services, effective marketing and improved tourism experiences.
The Tourism Development Levy is among the mechanisms used to mobilise resources for developing and improving tourism infrastructure and services in the country.
