Tanzania Olympic Committee (TOC) president Anthony Mtaka has backed the growth of swimming competitions, saying sport can help keep young people engaged in productive activities while building discipline and confidence.
Mr Mtaka said swimming and other sporting activities provide young people with a constructive way to develop their talents, set goals and avoid behaviours that could negatively affect their future.
He made the remarks during swimming championships held at Monti International School in Mikocheni, Dar es Salaam, where he commended organisers for providing young swimmers with an opportunity to compete and gain experience.
According to Mr Mtaka, such competitions are also important for identifying promising athletes and preparing them for higher-level national and international events.
“Sport gives young people an opportunity to develop discipline, confidence and a sense of purpose,” he said, stressing the need to continue creating platforms where young athletes can showcase and improve their abilities.
The championships come as Tanzania steps up preparations for an international swimming competition in Uganda next month.
Tanzania Aquatics chairman David Mwasyoge said the association is preparing a 30-member team to represent the country in the competition.
He said the preparations are aimed at improving Tanzania's performance in swimming and giving athletes exposure to international competition.
“This is part of our efforts to strengthen Tanzania's competitiveness in swimming and develop athletes capable of representing the country at international level,” Mr Mwasyoge said.
Monti International School director Fatma Fernandes also welcomed the turnout, saying the participation of swimmers from different regions showed growing interest in the sport.
She said the increasing number of participants was encouraging and called for more opportunities for young people to take part in swimming and develop their talents.
The championships brought together swimmers from across the country, giving them an opportunity to test their abilities against other competitors as they prepare for future national and international competitions.
