Mkenda joins global push to unlock more funding for education

Tanzania has joined a fresh global push to mobilise more financing for education, as countries and development partners seek additional resources to strengthen education systems and expand access to quality learning.

Minister for Education, Science and Technology Prof Adolf Mkenda participated in the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) Multiplier Possibility meeting held at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Friday.

The meeting brought together education stakeholders to discuss ways of mobilising resources through the GPE fund, which supports education programmes in member countries.

It was chaired by former President Jakaya Kikwete, who is also chairperson of the GPE Board of Directors.

The discussions focused on encouraging governments, donors and other education partners to increase their financial contributions to support countries facing resource constraints in implementing education programmes.

For Tanzania, which is among countries benefiting from GPE financing, the initiative could provide additional support for efforts to strengthen the education system and implement development programmes.

The meeting also placed the spotlight on the need for sustained investment in education, particularly in areas where governments require additional resources to improve access and the quality of learning.

Through the GPE financing framework, participating countries receive support to implement education priorities and strengthen systems needed to deliver education services.

The New York meeting was therefore part of wider efforts to secure additional funding from international partners and channel it towards education programmes in countries that need further investment.

GPE is a global partnership that works with developing countries and education partners to support national education plans, with financing aimed at helping countries improve their education systems.

For Tanzania, continued access to such financing is expected to complement domestic efforts to fund education programmes and address investment needs across the sector.
