Masauni urges green economy action, backs NEMC role at summit

By Tatu Mohamed

Minister of State in the Vice President’s Office (Union Affairs and Environment), Hamad Yusuf Masauni, has called for Tanzania to turn its environmental and climate opportunities into jobs, businesses and improved livelihoods, while recognising the National Environment Management Council (NEMC) as a key institutional stakeholder of the Tanzania Green Summit.

Speaking on September 15, 2026, at the opening of the Tanzania Green Summit 2026, Mr Masauni commended NEMC for its role in promoting environmental management through enforcement of environmental laws, environmental impact assessments, inspections, research, public awareness and coordination.

He said Tanzania has considerable opportunities in renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, clean cooking, the circular economy, conservation, waste management and the blue economy, but stressed the need to translate these opportunities into tangible economic benefits.

“These opportunities must be transformed into economic value, employment opportunities and improved livelihoods for our citizens,” he said.

Mr Masauni also placed emphasis on young people, saying they should be treated as innovators, entrepreneurs, researchers and future leaders of Tanzania’s green economy.

He urged stakeholders to link young people with the skills, technology, capital, professional support and markets needed to turn environmental solutions into viable businesses and employment.

The minister further challenged participants at the summit to move beyond discussions and focus on implementation and measurable outcomes.

He said the summit should help stakeholders “turn discussions into action, action into measurable results, and results into sustainable achievements” that deliver benefits to the country.

The recognition of NEMC’s role at the summit comes as environmental management increasingly intersects with Tanzania’s efforts to expand clean energy, improve waste management, strengthen climate resilience and create new economic opportunities.
