The Ministry of Energy has been recognised as Tanzania’s best-performing ministry in Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL), highlighting its use of evidence to track the implementation of energy plans, programmes and projects.
The ministry received the Best Performing Ministry Award in MEL on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, during the official opening of the fifth National Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Conference in Arusha.
Deputy Speaker of Parliament Daniel Sillo presented the award, which recognises the ministry’s performance in using monitoring and evaluation systems to assess implementation and strengthen decision-making in the energy sector.
The recognition comes as the government continues to implement major energy projects aimed at expanding electricity access, strengthening energy infrastructure and improving the reliability of energy services.
Speaking after receiving the award, the ministry’s Director of Monitoring and Evaluation, Ms Anitha Ishengoma, said the recognition reflected efforts to strengthen evidence-based management across the ministry and institutions under it.
“We are proud to see the efforts and achievements of the energy sector in monitoring and evaluation recognised through the 2026 Best Performing Ministry Award,” she said.
Ms Ishengoma said the achievement was the result of collective efforts, accountability, cooperation and commitment by ministry officials and institutions under its supervision.
She said monitoring and evaluation had become an important tool for tracking the implementation of government plans, programmes and projects, while helping decision-makers identify gaps and take corrective measures.
The approach, she added, would continue to support decisions based on evidence and measurable results rather than implementation alone.
“This award is not the end of the journey, but a catalyst to increase the pace, quality and accountability and deliver meaningful results in the energy sector for the benefit of citizens,” Ms Ishengoma said.
The five-day National MEL Conference provides a platform for public institutions and other stakeholders to share experiences on monitoring, evaluation and learning and discuss ways of improving the delivery and impact of government programmes and projects.
For the Energy Ministry, the award places greater emphasis on maintaining the systems that produced the recognition and translating improved monitoring into measurable results for energy users.
