Police in Dar es Salaam are holding a 35-year-old man accused of assaulting a traffic police officer while he was enforcing road regulations along Bagamoyo Road in Lugalo, Kinondoni.
The incident occurred at about 7:30am on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, when Sgt Andrew, police number F.8886, attached to the Kinondoni Traffic Police Unit, stopped vehicles allegedly using the service road outside the authorised procedure.
Among the vehicles stopped was a Toyota Runx, registration number T 455 EER, which was being driven by the suspect, identified as Conrad Agonza Kayoza, a resident of Lugalo and Mloganzila.
Police said Kayoza got out of the vehicle and allegedly attacked the officer with punches and kicks as he carried out his duties.
The confrontation attracted members of the public, some of whom reportedly intervened and assaulted Kayoza before the situation was brought under control.
The suspect was taken to hospital for treatment. Police said he would be questioned once he recovers, after which further legal action would be taken.
The incident highlights the tensions that can arise when traffic rules are enforced on busy roads, while also raising concerns over attacks on public officers carrying out lawful duties.
Dar es Salaam Police warned that it would take swift legal action against anyone found attacking police officers while they are performing their official duties.
The force also urged motorists and other road users to comply with traffic regulations and resolve disputes through lawful channels rather than resorting to violence.
