Tanzania’s Prisons Commissioner General Jeremiah Yoram Katungu has held talks with Chinese Ambassador to Tanzania Chen Mingjian on expanding cooperation in technology and agriculture, with a focus on improving production and food self-sufficiency.
CGP Katungu held the talks during his visit to the Chinese Embassy in Dar es Salaam on August 13, 2026, where he met Ambassador Chen to explore areas where the Tanzania Prisons Service and Chinese partners could work together.
The Prisons chief said technology and agriculture were among the key areas where the service was seeking stronger partnerships as it works to increase production and strengthen its capacity to meet its own food requirements.
He said the service was also open to working with private companies and other stakeholders on investment opportunities, provided such partnerships comply with existing laws and procedures and protect the interests of all parties.
The approach could open the door to greater private-sector participation in prison-related agricultural projects, particularly those capable of improving productivity and introducing modern farming technologies.
Ambassador Chen said Tanzania and China had maintained strong relations, adding that Chinese companies were increasingly interested in investment opportunities in Tanzania.
He said the embassy would give priority to the issues discussed and continue sharing information with the Prisons Service to identify areas for practical cooperation in technology and agriculture.
The talks highlight the potential for stronger Tanzania-China partnerships to support modern farming, technology transfer and increased domestic production.
For the Prisons Service, such cooperation could help improve agricultural output and food security while creating a stronger foundation for commercially viable production activities within the sector.
