The Tanzania Prison Services says it will use the ongoing Commissioner General of Prisons (CGP)Cup to identify ,nurture and develop talents which will be used to beef its sports teams.
This year’s edition of CGP Cup kicked off last Friday at Ukongo Prison in Dar es Salaam ,Speaking in an interview on Saturday Senior Superintendent of Prisons Bakari Sudi who is Tanzania Prisons Assistant Director of Sports and Culture said the cup is vital for the unity ,togetherness and development of sports among prison officers in the country.
The CGP Cup 2026 which is an annual sports tournament organized by the Tanzania Prisons Service is aimed at scouting and nurturing talent for its institutional sports teams and this year’s edition was opened last Friday by CGP Jeremiah Yoram Katungu at Ukonga in Dar es Salaam .
Sudi said the cup which was previously known as Mwanguku Cup , ends this weekend and it has attracted 721 athletes in various sporting fields like Football ,Netball ,Volleyball,Basketball ,Handball ,Darts and Athletics .
The official said the athletes and their team officials who are camping at Ukonga and Dar es Salaam Police Academy(DPA)are from all the eight zones of the country.
He said Tanzania Prisons have deployed coaches in various sporting disciplines to identify, nurture and develop promising talents to beef up the institutional teams.
“ We have revived the Commissioner General of Prisons (CGP)Cup and this year the cup will be used to expose talents and beef up all Tanzania Prison teams ,we have competent and qualified coaches who will identify the talents, on top of being a healthy tool the cup also brings togetherness and unity among our officers,” he said .
He said all top three winners in team and individual sporting events will be awarded with cups and medals on the final day of the cup.
The Cup ends on Friday which also marks the 65 anniversary of the Tanzania Prisons Service, the day highlighting correctional milestones, inmate rehabilitation, and vocational training programs.
According to Tanzania Prisons, the day celebrates the founding and ongoing evolution of Tanzania's correctional services, focusing on shifting from pure confinement to offender rehabilitation and technical skills development.
Tanzania Prisons have many sporting teams which compete at both District ,Regional and National events ,the teams have produced athletes who have represented the country at International Games like Commonwealth ,Olympics and African Games among others .
