Tanzania judoka Andrew Thomas Mlugu has described his performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, as a turning point in his career, saying the experience has provided valuable lessons that will shape his future success.
Mlugu finished seventh in the judo competition, becoming the first Tanzanian judoka to reach such a position at the Commonwealth Games — a result he considers a significant milestone for the country’s judo development.
Speaking to The Respondent Online, Mlugu said competing against some of the world’s best judokas gave him important exposure and highlighted areas he needs to improve as he targets stronger performances in future international tournaments.
“The competition has taught me a lot. My coach has identified both my weaknesses and strengths, and we will continue working on them so that I can perform better in upcoming championships,” Mlugu said.
The Tanzanian athlete narrowly missed a chance to fight for a bronze medal after being eliminated in the medal qualification stage. However, he said the experience has strengthened his determination to work harder and eventually win medals for Tanzania at major global events.
“This achievement has given me motivation to continue improving. My goal is to keep raising Tanzania’s flag higher and bring home medals in future international competitions,” he said.
Mlugu expressed appreciation to his coaches, Tanzania Judo Federation officials, and all Tanzanians who supported him during the competition, saying their encouragement played an important role in his journey.
His historic performance in Glasgow marks another step forward for Tanzanian judo, as the country continues efforts to develop athletes capable of competing and succeeding on the international stage.
