The Ministry of Finance has stepped up efforts to improve how government programmes and projects are monitored and evaluated, with the launch of its first Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Forum for the 2026/27 financial year.
The forum, organised through the ministry’s Monitoring and Evaluation Unit, is being held at Cate Hotel in Morogoro and brings together officials and experts responsible for tracking the performance of the ministry and institutions under its supervision.
The initiative is expected to strengthen the use of evidence in assessing whether government plans and interventions are delivering the intended results, while identifying areas requiring improvement.
Participants include facilitators from the Prime Minister’s Office, the President’s Office–Public Service Management and Good Governance, the Office of the Treasury Registrar and Mzumbe University.
Also attending are heads of departments, units and M&E sections from institutions under the Ministry of Finance, M&E focal persons from affiliated institutions and M&E officers from the ministry.
The forum is being held under the theme “Strengthening the Monitoring and Evaluation System for Evidence-Based Decision-Making.”
Before the official launch, participants engaged in discussions on various aspects of monitoring and evaluation, facilitated by experts drawn from different public institutions and academia.
The discussions are intended to build a common understanding of M&E practices and provide participants with an opportunity to share experiences, challenges and approaches that can improve the quality of government performance assessments.
For citizens, effective monitoring and evaluation can play an important role in ensuring that public resources are used efficiently and that government interventions remain focused on achieving measurable results.
The forum is therefore expected to help the Ministry of Finance and institutions under it develop coordinated strategies for strengthening M&E systems and improving the implementation of their mandates.
By promoting evidence-based decision-making, the ministry aims to ensure that information generated through monitoring and evaluation is not merely collected but is used to guide planning, resource allocation and improvements in public service delivery.
The forum also provides a platform for M&E practitioners to strengthen collaboration and share lessons that can support better implementation of government programmes during the 2026/27 financial year.
