Absa Bank Tanzania has launched Absa Lipa Sasa, a TanQR-powered digital payment solution aimed at simplifying transactions for businesses and consumers while supporting the country's drive towards a cashless economy.
The platform, unveiled in Dar es Salaam on August 6, enables merchants to accept payments from customers using different banks and mobile money wallets through a single QR code, eliminating the need for multiple payment devices and systems.
Speaking during the launch, Absa Bank Tanzania Head of Commercial, Victor Nchimbi, said the solution is designed to provide a faster, more secure and convenient payment experience for both businesses and customers.
“Through a single QR code, merchants can receive payments from customers across multiple banks and mobile wallets. This reduces the cost and complexity of doing business while improving transaction speed, record-keeping and security,” he said.
The solution is built on Tanzania’s national QR code standard (TanQR), developed under the guidance of the Bank of Tanzania to promote interoperability across financial service providers.
According to the bank, the initiative aligns with government efforts to expand financial inclusion and accelerate digital transformation by making electronic payments more accessible to businesses of all sizes.
Mr Nchimbi said the platform offers instant transaction confirmations, reduces dependence on cash and lowers payment acceptance costs, particularly for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).
He noted that the solution is suitable for small, medium and large businesses, including informal traders seeking a simple and secure way to receive payments.
Absa Bank Tanzania Marketing and Communications Manager, Beda Biswalo, said the launch reflects the bank’s commitment to supporting entrepreneurs and businesses through innovative financial solutions.
“Absa Lipa Sasa demonstrates our commitment to helping customers grow through simple, secure and accessible payment solutions that address their everyday needs while advancing financial inclusion and digital transformation,” he said.
The bank said the platform will help merchants expand their customer base, reduce cash-handling risks and build digital transaction records that could improve access to future financial services.
The launch forms part of Absa Bank Tanzania’s broader digital transformation strategy aimed at strengthening its role as a trusted financial partner while contributing to Tanzania’s growing digital economy.
Absa Lipa Sasa is now available nationwide, with businesses able to register through any Absa branch or their relationship managers.
