Tanzania and China have pledged to further strengthen defence cooperation, with the government highlighting the role of security partnerships in creating a stable environment for economic growth and national development.
Minister for Defence and National Service, Dr Rhimo Nyansaho, said closer cooperation between the two countries in defence diplomacy would continue to support peace, security and sustainable development.
Dr Nyansaho made the remarks on July 21, 2026, during celebrations to mark the 99th anniversary of the establishment of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA), hosted by Chinese Ambassador to Tanzania Chen Mingjian.
He said the anniversary presented an opportunity to reflect on the long-standing friendship between Tanzania and China and identify new areas for strengthening cooperation, particularly in defence and security.
“The continued partnership between Tanzania and China in defence is important in building capacity, enhancing security cooperation and supporting national development,” Dr Nyansaho said.
The minister commended President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who is also Commander-in-Chief of the Tanzania People’s Defence Force (TPDF), and Chinese President Xi Jinping for maintaining the historic relations established by Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere and China’s former leader Mao Zedong.
He said the partnership, which has existed for decades, remains a key pillar in promoting mutual cooperation between the two countries.
Speaking at the event, Ambassador Chen Mingjian said China would continue strengthening its defence cooperation with Tanzania, including through military training and professional exchanges.
The ambassador said the partnership reflects the strong relations between the two nations and China’s commitment to working with Tanzania in areas of mutual interest.
The Tanzania-China defence relationship has developed through various areas, including training programmes, knowledge sharing and institutional cooperation, contributing to improved capacity within the security sector.
The renewed commitment comes as both countries continue to expand their broader cooperation in trade, investment, infrastructure and other development sectors.
