The Police Force in Rukwa Region has strengthened its community engagement efforts after visiting and supporting an elderly resident of Katai Street in Sumbawanga Municipality, Mr Godfrey Lusawa, following concerns about his living conditions.
The support, provided on July 18, 2026, was delivered by police officers led by Rukwa Regional Police Commander SACP Shadrack Masija, after Police Officer in Charge of Lwiche Ward, Inspector Pendo Nungu, identified Mr Lusawa during a community policing exercise.
Inspector Nungu was conducting outreach activities under the Community Policing Philosophy, which seeks to build closer cooperation between citizens and police in maintaining security and addressing challenges affecting communities.
Speaking after receiving the assistance, Mr Lusawa thanked the Police Force, saying the support had brought him relief and helped meet some of his essential needs, including food and a safer place to stay.
“This support has given me encouragement and shown that the community and leaders still care about people facing difficult circumstances,” Mr Lusawa said.
Katai Street Government Chairman Mr Rebi Msukwa praised the Police Force for the initiative, saying it demonstrated the importance of compassion and collective responsibility in supporting vulnerable members of society, particularly the elderly.
He said such efforts serve as a reminder that improving community welfare requires cooperation between government institutions, leaders and citizens.
The initiative reflects the broader role of community policing, which goes beyond crime prevention to promote trust, social responsibility and stronger partnerships between security institutions and the public.
