Prime Minister Dr Mwigulu Nchemba has said Tanzania's long-term development will depend on building a society founded on integrity, patriotism, accountability and strong public institutions, describing these as essential pillars for sustainable national progress.
Speaking on Monday after meeting Joseph Butiku, chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation, at the Prime Minister's Office in Oyster Bay, Dr Nchemba said economic progress alone would not guarantee lasting development unless it was accompanied by responsible citizenship and effective governance.
"There can be no sustainable development without citizens who uphold integrity, patriotism and accountability. As a nation, we must continue investing in shaping responsible citizens while strengthening our institutions," he said.
The meeting centred on national values, governance, democratic development and the role of institutions in promoting peace, unity and inclusive development.
Mr Butiku welcomed the government's continued collaboration with the Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation, citing support for the planned Mwalimu Nyerere World Leadership Institute, which is expected to serve as a centre of excellence for leadership training and research.
He said Tanzania should continue nurturing a culture of mutual respect, tolerance, adherence to the rule of law and democratic principles, arguing that these values are fundamental to national cohesion.
Mr Butiku also called for public debate to remain respectful and issue-based, saying criticism should be expressed within the framework of the law while protecting the dignity of national leaders, elders, retired leaders and religious figures.
He said safeguarding peace, security and national unity required every citizen to fulfil their civic responsibilities, adding that the foundation would continue promoting civic education on ethics, patriotism and peaceful coexistence.
Mr Butiku further acknowledged government efforts to strengthen the rule of law, local government institutions and democratic governance, saying such measures had contributed to greater national stability.
He also noted that the continued prioritisation of the constitutional review process in the ruling CCM's 2025–2030 election manifesto reflected the government's commitment to governance reforms.
Dr Nchemba reaffirmed the government's commitment to strengthening the rule of law, accountability, access to justice and the capacity of public institutions to improve service delivery and protect citizens' rights.
He said the government would continue working closely with the Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation to promote ethical leadership, patriotism and national unity, including supporting the establishment of the Mwalimu Nyerere World Leadership Institute.
