Zanzibar President and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has conveyed Tanzania’s condolences to Qatar following the death of former Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, describing him as a leader whose legacy shaped the country’s development path.
Dr Mwinyi delivered the message of sympathy on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, when he visited the Qatar Embassy in Dar es Salaam to sign the condolence book opened in honour of the late leader.
Through Qatar’s Ambassador to Tanzania, Fahad Rashid Al-Muraikhi, President Mwinyi extended condolences to Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the royal family, the government and citizens of Qatar following the loss.
The Zanzibar President said Sheikh Hamad would be remembered for his visionary leadership and contribution to Qatar’s transformation, particularly in strengthening education, economic development, social welfare and the country’s influence in global affairs.
“His leadership contributed significantly to Qatar’s progress and its growing role in international matters,” President Mwinyi said in his message of condolence.
Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who ruled Qatar from 1995 to 2013 before handing power to his son Sheikh Tamim, died on July 12, 2026, at the age of 74.
President Mwinyi signed the condolence book shortly after returning to Tanzania from India, where he had completed an official visit focused on enhancing cooperation between the two countries.
The condolence message highlights the close diplomatic ties between Tanzania and Qatar, with both countries continuing to strengthen cooperation in areas including trade, investment and development.
