Police in Dar es Salaam have arrested a man in connection with the alleged killing of his father and paternal uncle, whose bodies were later discovered buried within the family's residential compound in Mwananyamala.
In a statement issued on Saturday, July 18, the Dar es Salaam Special Police Zone said the suspect, identified as Hosamu Hamza, also known as Maopena, was arrested on the evening of July 17 in Makongo following information provided by members of the public and other security agencies.
Police said the suspect was found carrying a knife believed to have blood stains, while his clothes were also stained with what is suspected to be blood. He was taken into custody for questioning.
According to the statement, while the suspect was being questioned, officers at Oysterbay Police Station received reports from residents in the Sindano area of Mwananyamala that three people living in the same house had not been seen and that blood had been found inside the premises.
Police launched an investigation involving forensic experts and crime scene investigators.
The investigation led to the recovery of the bodies of Hamza Juma Omari, 48, also known as Mautila, and Ally Juma Omari, 37, who were allegedly found buried in a pit within the compound of their home.
Police said preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect is the son of the late Hamza Juma Omari and is being investigated over the alleged killings.
Authorities said the motive for the incident has not yet been established and investigations are continuing.
The police thanked members of the public, forensic experts and other security agencies for their cooperation, saying information shared by residents had contributed significantly to the progress of the investigation.
The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue. No charges had been announced by the time the police statement was issued.
