Tanzania installs new transformer in Ngara to improve electricity supply

By The Respondents Reporter

The Government of Tanzania has moved to improve electricity supply in Ngara District, Kagera Region, after the installation of a new high-capacity transformer began following directives aimed at ending persistent power interruptions affecting residents and businesses.

The Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO) has started installing a new 5MVA transformer at the Djululigwa power substation in Ngara, in line with instructions from the Minister for Energy, Deogratius Ndejembi

The project is part of government efforts to strengthen electricity reliability in areas experiencing rapid growth in demand.

The intervention follows concerns raised in Parliament by the Member of Parliament for Ngara, Dotto Bahemu, over frequent power outages in the district.

In response, the Ministry of Energy directed TANESCO to urgently upgrade the system by installing a larger transformer within a short timeframe.

The new transformer, which arrived on May 19, 2026, replaces an older 3MVA unit that had been overwhelmed by increasing electricity demand from households, businesses, and public institutions. TANESCO engineers immediately began installation work upon its arrival at the Djululigwa substation.

According to TANESCO Ngara District Manager, Eng. Amani Chidundo, the installation is expected to be completed within about 12 hours.

He explained that the previous transformer could no longer adequately support the growing load, leading to repeated power interruptions in the area.

Once completed, the upgrade is expected to improve power stability, reduce outages, and support economic activities such as small businesses, social services, and community development projects that depend on reliable electricity.

Residents and local leaders have welcomed the development, saying it will bring relief to the community and improve daily life and business operations.

The Member of Parliament’s representative, who witnessed the installation, commended the Government for responding quickly to the challenge.

He said the intervention reflects the commitment of the Government under President Samia Suluhu Hassan to ensure citizens receive reliable public services, including electricity.

The installation marks an important step in strengthening power infrastructure in Ngara and addressing long-standing challenges of electricity interruptions in the district.
