The Ministry of Health has asked Parliament to approve a TZS 1.8 trillion budget for the 2026/27 financial year, with a large share earmarked for development projects and strengthening healthcare services across the country.

Presenting the ministry’s expenditure estimates in Parliament on Monday, Health Minister Mohamed Mchengerwa said the proposed budget under Vote 52 is intended to improve service delivery and sustain ongoing reforms in the health sector.

Of the total amount requested, TZS 1.148 trillion—equivalent to 64 percent of the budget—will finance development projects, including investments in healthcare infrastructure, medical equipment and specialised services.

Mr Mchengerwa told lawmakers that TZS 789.45 billion of the development budget will come from domestic sources, while TZS 358.56 billion is expected from development partners.

The ministry is also seeking TZS 652.236 billion for recurrent expenditure, accounting for 36 percent of the proposed budget.

According to the minister, TZS 516.323 billion has been allocated for salaries of healthcare workers, reflecting the government’s continued efforts to strengthen human resources in the sector. Another TZS 135.913 billion will cover other operational expenses.

Mr Mchengerwa credited President Samia Suluhu Hassan for increasing investment in healthcare over the past five years, saying the funding had helped Tanzania remain among the few African countries offering affordable treatment services to citizens.

He said approval of the proposed budget would enable the ministry to implement key strategic programmes and deliver on 11 priority areas aimed at positioning Tanzania as a benchmark for quality healthcare services on the continent.

The proposed spending plan comes at a time when the government is expanding access to healthcare services, upgrading hospitals and increasing investment in specialised treatment as demand for quality care continues to rise.
