Peace highlighted as key foundation for unity and development in Tanzania

Peace has been described as an essential resource that unites society and drives development from the family level to the national stage, with citizens urged to take active responsibility in protecting and promoting it.

Speaking to journalists in Dar es Salaam on Thursday, April 16, 2026, some residents said peace remains the backbone of strong families, social cohesion, and national progress.

Ms. Stella Mlawa, a resident of Ilala, said peace is the foundation of proper upbringing in families and sustainable national development.

She noted that when peace is disturbed at household level, moral values weaken, and at the national level both the economy and development efforts are negatively affected.

She also called on citizens to use social media responsibly, warning that misuse of digital platforms can easily become a source of conflict and tension within society.

Peace, she emphasized, should be protected by all citizens to ensure stability and continued progress in the country.

Meanwhile, the Secretary General of the Tanzania Traditional Sports Association, Mr. John Nguchiro, said peace and sports are closely linked and reinforce each other.

He explained that sporting activities thrive in peaceful environments and serve as a tool for promoting unity, cooperation, and understanding among people from different cultural and social backgrounds.

He further highlighted the contribution of the Father of the Nation, Julius Kambarage Nyerere, in strengthening national values, noting that he used sports as a platform to unite communities and promote peace.

Mr. Nguchiro also commended the efforts of President Samia Suluhu Hassan for continuing to safeguard peace, unity, and solidarity in the country, which he said remain key pillars of Tanzania’s development agenda.
