The Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Chinese businesses operating in the country while ensuring strict adherence to tax laws.
TRA Commissioner General, Mr. Yusuph Juma Mwenda, emphasized that the authority will collaborate with foreign investors but will take firm action against those engaging in tax evasion.
Speaking at a tax forum for Chinese business operators in Dar es Salaam, Commissioner General Mwenda praised the contributions of Chinese companies to Tanzania’s economy and tax revenue.
At the same time, he cautioned that TRA has “no tolerance for fraudulent practices” and will pursue anyone attempting to evade taxes, regardless of nationality.
“TRA has no conflict with Chinese businesses in Tanzania. Our conflict is with tax evaders, whether they come from China or anywhere else,” Mwenda said, highlighting the authority’s commitment to fairness and compliance.
The event was attended by China’s Ambassador to Tanzania, Chen Mingjian, who lauded the long-standing partnership between the two countries.
He underlined the importance of educating Chinese investors on tax compliance and stressed that China will not tolerate its businesspeople engaging in tax evasion.
Ambassador Chen added that the forum offers an important platform for understanding tax obligations and promoting transparent business practices.
Commissioner Mwenda also highlighted TRA’s efforts to implement 284 recommendations from the Presidential Tax Review Committee under President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan.
These reforms, he explained, are designed to create a modern, fair, and efficient tax system, reduce administrative burdens, and make compliance easier for all businesses.
TRA will continue providing tax education, registering unregistered operators, and taking decisive action against non-compliance, ensuring a level playing field for all.
Stambuli Myovela, Chairman of the Business Forum, praised TRA for improving the tax environment, noting that the authority’s initiatives allow businesses to comply efficiently and voluntarily, fostering trust and stability in the business community.
