The government has disbursed TZS 1.319 trillion for the implementation of development projects in the construction sector during the 2025/26 financial year, as it continues to invest heavily in roads, bridges, airports and public buildings to strengthen national infrastructure and support economic growth.

Works minister Abdallah Ulega said the funds have already been released for projects approved under the ministry’s budget, representing 72.8 percent of the total allocation for the financial year.

Presenting the implementation report of the 2025/26 plan and budget, together with projections for the 2026/27 financial year under Vote 98 of the Ministry of Works, Mr Ulega told the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Infrastructure in Dodoma on March 23, 2026 that the funds have accelerated the implementation of key development projects across the country.

He said in the road sector the Tanzania National Roads Agency (Tanroads) has completed the construction of 206.33 kilometres of roads to tarmac standard as well as four major bridges, improving road connectivity in several regions.

The minister added that the government also addressed infrastructure damage caused by heavy rains linked to the El Niño phenomenon, noting that 76 out of 81 emergency bridge reconstruction projects have already been completed.

Construction of several strategic bridges is ongoing at different stages of implementation, including Pangani, Jangwani, Mbambe, Sukuma, Simiyu, Mirumba and Mitomoni bridges, which are expected to improve transportation and facilitate the movement of goods and passengers once completed.

Mr Ulega also highlighted progress in the aviation sector, saying the first phase of rehabilitation works at Tabora Airport and Iringa Airport has been completed.

Meanwhile, construction of Msalato International Airport in Dodoma has reached 83 percent completion. Other airport projects underway include Sumbawanga Airport and Shinyanga Airport, both at 95 percent completion, while Musoma Airport stands at 67 percent and Kigoma Airport at 42 percent.

In the ferry transport sector, the Tanzania Electrical, Mechanical and Electronics Services Agency (Temesa) has completed ferry terminals at Bwiro–Bukondo and Kisoraya–Rugezi–Bukimwi, as well as the construction of the Kisorya–Rugezi ferry and the rehabilitation of the vessel MV Tangazo.

Meanwhile, the Tanzania Buildings Agency (TBA) is continuing with the construction of housing for public servants in Magomeni Kota Phase II and Temeke Kota in Dar es Salaam, Ghana Kota in Mwanza and Kaloleni Kota in Arusha.

Mr Ulega said the ministry will continue implementing strategic infrastructure projects in the 2026/27 financial year in line with the development vision of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, which focuses on delivering sustainable development through modern, safe and efficient infrastructure.

For his part, the chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Infrastructure, Selemani Kakoso, commended the ministry for the progress made in supervising and implementing key projects, particularly road and bridge construction that facilitates the movement of goods and passengers across the country.
