Tanzania embraces AI to boost business growth and protect consumers

Tanzania is increasingly turning to technology and research to strengthen its business environment, boost economic growth, and safeguard consumer rights.

Deputy Minister for Industry and Trade, Patribas Katambi, highlighted the government’s commitment during the World Competition Day celebrations in Dar es Salaam, urging businesses and institutions to leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) and research to improve efficiency and transparency.

“This year’s theme, ‘Artificial Intelligence in Maintaining Fair Competition and Protecting Consumers,’ reflects the global shift toward technology-driven markets,” said Katambi.

 “Government is committed to being a bridge, not a barrier, ensuring policies protect both consumers and businesses while promoting innovation and fair competition.”he added

The Deputy Minister directed all institutions under the Ministry to focus on research and innovation, particularly in priority sectors such as agriculture, trade, and value addition, emphasizing that these efforts should directly benefit Tanzanians and the national economy.

Judge Rose Ebrahim, Chairperson of the Competition Council, urged businesses to comply with competition laws, warning against unfair practices such as price-fixing that could harm consumers. 

Dr. Aggrey Mlimuka, Chairperson of the Competition Commission, underscored the role of AI in creating transparency and efficiency, enabling better protection for consumers and fostering fair business practices.

Acting Director General of the Fair Competition Commission, Ms. Hadija Ngasongwa, noted that the celebration included public outreach activities to educate citizens about their rights, promote market transparency, and prevent anti-competitive practices. 

She added that the FCC is strengthening partnerships with other authorities to support economic growth and innovation.

World Competition Day, observed annually on December 5, continues to emphasize the importance of fair competition, consumer protection, and now, the transformative role of AI in Tanzania’s business landscape.
