Media tipped as key driver of union public education

By The Respondents Reporter

The government has identified the media as a central pillar in strengthening public understanding of the Union, with plans to deepen collaboration with journalists and editors across the country, the Minister of State in the Vice President’s Office (Union and Environment), Mr Hamad Yussuf Masauni, has said.

Speaking on December 19, 2025, during the Asubuhi Njema programme aired by the Zanzibar Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC), Mr Masauni said journalists have a significant responsibility in delivering accurate and accessible public education on the Union, given their reach and influence in shaping public discourse.

He said the Vice President’s Office has deliberately placed the media at the heart of the public education programme on the Union, recognising their role in ensuring citizens are well informed about the history, principles and relevance of the Union.

As part of this strategy, Mr Masauni said the government has begun structured engagements with media leaders to build a common understanding of the programme.

“Today we have organised a seminar for editors of media outlets in Zanzibar. This will be followed by a similar seminar for editors from Mainland Tanzania, and later a series of conferences,” he said.

He noted that the public education programme is particularly targeting young people, who form the largest beneficiary group as many were born after the formation of the Union in 1964.

He said equipping the youth with factual knowledge about the Union is essential for safeguarding national unity and strengthening cohesion.

Mr Masauni reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sustaining the programme and working closely with the media to ensure consistent and balanced information on the Union reaches all Tanzanians.
