Tanzanians urged to claim rights through legal channels, not violence

By The Respondents Reporter

Tanzanians have been urged to follow legal procedures when seeking their rights instead of resorting to violence, vandalism, or looting.

Asraji Likwati, Chairman of Motorcycle Passenger Transporters in Kimara, Dar es Salaam, made the appeal today while reflecting on the unrest that erupted on Wednesday, October 28, during Tanzania’s General Election.

He condemned some youths who engaged in destructive acts, targeting property of ordinary citizens with no political involvement.

“Justice must be pursued through proper channels. Many innocent people suffered because of these violent acts. For example, stealing from small traders who have no political influence is unacceptable. Recently, we raised concerns about transport issues, and the government responded by providing new buses. Yet today, some of these buses are being set on fire. This behavior cannot be tolerated,” Mr. Likwati said.

He warned that such unrest has broader consequences, including disruptions to cash flow, negative impacts on trade with neighboring countries relying on Dar es Salaam port, and damage to Tanzania’s image as a peaceful and united nation.
