The unrest that erupted on Wednesday, October 29, 2025—coinciding with Tanzania’s General Election—has left a trail of devastation across multiple regions, with Lake Oil Group among the hardest-hit businesses.
The violent incidents, which swept through Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Mwanza, Mbeya, and other regions including Shinyanga, Geita, Songwe, Ruvuma, Mara, Dodoma, Kilimanjaro, and Iringa, resulted in widespread destruction of public and private property.
Lake Oil Group, one of Tanzania’s largest locally owned energy companies, saw 38 of its service stations vandalized and set ablaze while more than 300 employees were left without work, according to the company.
Addressing the media, the company’s Chief Operations Officer, Mr. Stephen Mtemi, described the incident as a significant setback not only for the business but also for the communities that rely on its services.
“These violent acts have caused enormous disruption. Beyond the material losses, hundreds of employees and their families have been adversely affected. We extend our deepest sympathies to all Tanzanians impacted by the unrest,” Mr. Mtemi said.
He emphasized that Lake Oil Group has always partnered with government institutions and local communities to support national development and employment.
He added that destruction of this scale hampers economic growth and undermines efforts to create stability and prosperity.
“Peace is the foundation of progress. When businesses are targeted, everyone loses—the economy, employees, and citizens. It is imperative that we come together to rebuild and safeguard our nation,” he said.
Authorities continue to assess the full extent of the damages, while efforts are underway to restore operations and provide support to affected workers.
The company has committed to resuming services as quickly as possible to ensure continuity for its customers and communities.
