Former Speaker of the National Assembly, Dr. Tulia Ackson, has withdrawn her candidacy for the Speaker’s post, marking a significant development in the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM)’s internal process to select the next head of Parliament.
Dr. Tulia, who had sought to return to the post she held from 2021 to 2025, announced her withdrawal today, November 7, 2025.
The move comes as CCM continues consultations ahead of naming its official nominee to preside over the 13th Parliament.
In a brief statement, Dr. Tulia thanked party members and supporters who had expressed confidence in her leadership, saying the decision was based on the broader interest of maintaining unity and stability within the party.
“I am grateful for the trust shown in me during this period,” she said. “After careful reflection and consultation, I have decided to step aside from the race. I believe this will help the party move forward cohesively and continue focusing on service to the nation.”
Dr. Tulia’s previous tenure as Speaker was defined by efforts to strengthen parliamentary procedures and streamline legislative business. Her leadership was also seen as a notable milestone for women in national governance.
CCM is expected to conclude its internal processes before presenting its nominee to Parliament for formal election.
The new Speaker will be responsible for guiding legislative debate, ensuring adherence to parliamentary rules, and overseeing the passage of national laws.
Political analysts say Dr. Tulia’s move could shape future political alignments within CCM, particularly among senior parliamentary figures.
However, they note that the withdrawal also signals the party’s emphasis on consensus-building ahead of key national priorities. The name of the official CCM candidate is expected to be announced soon.
