Zanzibar declares October 29 public holiday to facilitate voting

The President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has declared Wednesday, October 29, 2025, a public holiday to allow Zanzibaris to fully participate in the 2025 General Election.

In a statement issued today, President Mwinyi said the decision aims to ensure that all eligible voters have adequate time to cast their ballots and contribute to strengthening democracy in the Isles.

He urged citizens to exercise their right to vote peacefully and responsibly, while adhering to the guidelines of the Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC).

Dr. Mwinyi further emphasized the importance of maintaining unity and calm throughout the electoral process, noting that the election is a key pillar of national development and good governance.

“The government encourages all citizens to participate in the voting process while respecting the laws and regulations governing the elections,” the statement read in part.

The declaration underscores Zanzibar’s commitment to promoting democratic participation and ensuring a smooth and inclusive electoral process across the islands.
