Millions set to benefit as TANESCO scales up electric cooking initiative

By Our Respondents Reporter

Just days after the official launch of the special “Connect Electricity, Cook with Electricity” programme, the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) has begun implementing the initiative nationwide with remarkable success.

Under this programme, citizens are being connected to the national electricity grid while also gaining access to electric cooking appliances offered through an affordable loan arrangement.

The initiative is part of the country’s National Energy Compact, which aims to connect 8.5 million Tanzanians to electricity by 2030

The campaign has its possibly results, equivalent to about 1.7 million new customers each year.

Residents in several regions across the country have already begun to benefit from the programme since its official rollout on October 15, 2025.

Many have expressed their appreciation for the initiative, offering low-income households to obtain electric cooking stoves on credit.

Beneficiaries have also called on TANESCO to ensure the availability of low-consumption electric cookers to meet the growing demand.

According to several residents, cooking with electricity is both safer and more cost-effective compared to other energy sources including charcoal and firewood.

The programme is being implemented in partnership with the Modern Energy Cooking Services (MECS) project under the UK Government, allowing newly connected customers to repay the cost of their electric stoves in instalments through their regular electricity purchases.
