Azam start CAF Confederation Cup second round in style with 2–0 win over KMKM

Azam FC have kicked off their CAF Confederation Cup second-round campaign in emphatic fashion, securing a 2–0 victory over KMKM in the first-leg match played on Friday, October 18, at the New Amaan Complex Stadium in Zanzibar.

The win gives Azam a strong advantage ahead of the return leg in Dar es Salaam, as they aim to reach the group stage of Africa’s second-tier club competition for the first time in years.

Azam also earned TSh10 million under President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s “Goal la Mama” incentive, which rewards Tanzanian clubs for excelling in international competitions a timely boost to their continental mission.

The Ice Cream Makers wasted no time asserting dominance, opening the scoring in the sixth minute through Jephte Kasalamba, who unleashed a powerful long-range strike that left the KMKM goalkeeper with no chance.

Their relentless pressure paid off again in the 42nd minute when Pascal Msindo doubled the lead with a well-taken finish, ensuring Azam went into halftime comfortably ahead at 2–0.

The second half saw both sides creating chances, but neither managed to alter the scoreline as Azam’s defense stood firm to preserve their clean sheet and a vital first-leg win.

With the return leg set for the Azam Complex in Chamazi, the Dar es Salaam-based side hold a commanding position. KMKM will need to score at least three unanswered goals away from home — a tough challenge against an Azam side known for their solid home form.

The result not only boosts Azam’s hopes of progressing to the group stage but also reflects the growing strength of Tanzanian clubs on the continental stage under the leadership of President Samia, whose support continues to inspire sporting excellence.
