The Geological Survey of Tanzania (GST) has unveiled modern, affordable mineral exploration services aimed at transforming small-scale mining and reducing the financial risks associated with guesswork operations.
For decades, many artisanal miners have relied on trial and error, often losing their capital because of limited access to reliable geological information.
The new initiative is expected to change that by providing accurate and cost-effective exploration data tailored to their needs.
Speaking on Tuesday, September 24, 2025, at the 8th National Mining Technology Exhibition held at the Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan Grounds in Bombambili, Geita, GST Chief Physicist Octavian Minja emphasized the importance of using scientific surveys before investing in mining.
“Small-scale miners should take advantage of this opportunity. Through our services, they can access professional geological data before committing their resources. This reduces losses and increases productivity,” he said.
Mr. Minja noted that most small-scale miners operate without accurate geoscientific information, which would otherwise reveal the type of rocks, mineral deposits, and their formations.
As a result, many end up digging at random and exhausting their resources without success.
He explained that GST now uses advanced geophysical equipment capable of identifying subsurface rock types and the structures likely to host minerals.
“We encourage miners across the country to work with GST, especially at the exploration stage. This will protect their investments and help prevent the environmental damage caused by unplanned mining,” he added.
The services have been designed to match the financial capacity of small-scale miners while offering timely and reliable results.
Visitors to the GST booth at the exhibition have already shown strong interest, saying the services provide the kind of support they have long been waiting for.
By linking modern exploration technology with artisanal miners, GST is positioning itself as a bridge to safer, more productive, and more profitable mining ventures.
