With only four players and no substitutes, Tanzania’s women’s team defied the odds to finish second at the 2025 Homeless World Cup in Oslo, Norway.

The young women, all from Future Stars Academy in Arusha, impressed the world by defeating Austria 5–4 in the Division Two final, securing Tanzania’s highest-ever finish in the global competition for vulnerable youth.

Goals came from Loyce Dismas, Susan Michael, Varian Issa, and Sarah Jacob, whose teamwork and determination carried the team through the demanding week-long tournament.

More than 60 teams from 48 nations competed in the event, which aims to empower disadvantaged youth through sport.

Despite being newcomers, Tanzania’s squad stood out for their spirit and resilience.

“They played with courage and discipline, even though they had no substitutes. This shows the strength of Tanzanian youth,” said Ambassador Mobhare Matinyi, who represents Tanzania in the Nordic and Baltic countries as well as Ukraine.

Uganda emerged as the overall women’s champions after beating Romania in the Division One final, while Kenya finished third with victory over Mexico in Division Three. In the men’s category, Egypt lifted the overall title.

For Tanzania, however, the journey itself was a victory. This was the nation’s first appearance at the Homeless World Cup, an annual tournament organized by the Homeless World Cup Foundation in partnership with the Salvation Army.

“This achievement is not just about football it’s about hope, opportunity, and showing that even from difficult backgrounds, young Tanzanians can reach the world stage,” added Matinyi.

The next Homeless World Cup will take place in Mexico in 2026, where Tanzania is expected to build on its remarkable debut.
