Mara, Tanzania – The Managing Director of the Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO), Gissima Nyamo-Hanga, has died in a fatal road accident that occurred in the early hours of Sunday, April 13, 2025, in Bunda District, Mara Region.

Mara Regional Commissioner, Evans Mtambi, confirmed the incident, saying the crash happened between midnight and 1 a.m.

“It is true that the incident occurred and he has passed away. However, for more detailed information, please contact the Regional Police Commander,” Mtambi told reporters.

Regional Police Commander (RPC) for Mara, Pius Lutumo, later confirmed the details of the accident, saying it involved a Toyota Land Cruiser and a lorry in a head-on collision.

“The crash occurred at around 1:30 a.m. when the driver of the Toyota Land Cruiser, which was transporting the TANESCO Managing Director from Mwanza to Bunda, attempted to avoid a cyclist. In the process, the driver lost control of the vehicle and collided head-on with an oncoming lorry,” said Commander Lutumo.

Both Nyamo-Hanga and his driver died at the scene.

TANESCO's Mara Regional Manager, Nickson Babu, said the body of the late Managing Director has been taken to Bunda District Designated Hospital as the company awaits further directives regarding funeral arrangements.

Nyamo-Hanga's sudden death marks a significant loss to the nation’s power utility sector. He had been serving as the head of TANESCO, leading reforms aimed at expanding electricity access and improving service delivery across the country.
