Tanzania’s Attorney General, Mr. Hamza S. Johari, has urged government lawyers to strengthen their role in building a solid legal foundation that will support the country’s long-term development goals.
Speaking during the Annual General Meeting of the Government Attorneys Association in Dodoma, Mr. Johari said government lawyers play a key role in ensuring the rule of law is upheld as Tanzania works toward its 2050 Development Vision.
“Our theme this year is linked to the 2050 Vision. To reach that goal, we need a strong legal system. We, as government lawyers, must help the country get there,” he said.
The meeting is taking place from April 14 to 15, 2025, and brings together public attorneys from across the country.
Johari, who is also the Patron of the association, encouraged participants to use the meeting to reflect on their duties and discuss ways to improve their performance.
“This meeting gives us a chance to talk about key issues concerning our association and the legal sector as a whole,” he noted.
Earlier, Deputy Attorney General Mr. Samwel Maneno reassured the lawyers of continued support from the Office of the Attorney General.
“We will ensure every lawyer carries out their duties with courage and protection. Our office is always open and ready to listen,” he said.
Also attending the meeting was Mr. Shaaban Ramadhan Abdalla, Deputy Attorney General of Zanzibar. He thanked the organizers for inviting his office and praised the association for providing strong leadership to government lawyers.
The two-day meeting features the presentation of various reports and discussions on the direction of the association. It will conclude with the election of new leaders to guide the association for the next year.
The Guest of Honour at the closing ceremony is expected to be Hon. Dr. Doto Mashaka Biteko, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy.
