New building regulations to improve construction quality

By Our Reporter

The government of President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan is working to improve the construction of houses and other infrastructure by creating a new Building Code for the country.

This code will help guide the construction of different buildings and ensure they meet safety and quality standards.

The Ministry of Works, through the National Construction Council (NCC), is leading the effort. The council is responsible for organizing and developing rules for the construction sector, including the new Building Code.

They are working with various experts and stakeholders from both public and private sectors.

During a meeting in Morogoro to discuss the new regulations, Architect T’chawi Mike from the Association of Architects in Tanzania (AAT) explained that having these rules in place will reduce problems caused by poorly built structures.

He mentioned that buildings that don’t meet safety standards can lead to disasters, like collapsing or being unsafe during emergencies.

Engineer Innocent Johnbosco from the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) said that the new regulations are based on both national and international standards.

He believes this will improve the country’s construction industry. Dr. Daudi Augustino, an engineer from the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), added that it is important to educate people about how to use these rules correctly. This will prevent mistakes that could lead to bad construction practices.

Dr. Augustino also suggested that more people, especially those in education institutions that train construction experts, should be involved in creating the guidelines.

Architect Joseph Ngido from the Fire and Rescue Force (FRF) said they are ready to help make sure the regulations are used properly.

Engineer Magdalena Hyera from NCC confirmed that the council’s efforts are part of its legal duties.
