The Minister for Constitution and Legal Affairs, Dr. Damas Ndumbaro, has been elected Chairman of the African Union Special Committee of Law Ministers during a meeting that brought together ministers, ambassadors, and experts from the legal sector across African Union member states.
Speaking at the conclusion of the meeting, which lasted for nine days, Dr. Ndumbaro expressed his gratitude to the members of the committee for electing him as Chairman of the African Union Legal Sector Ministers’ Leadership Council, and extended his appreciation on behalf of the government of Tanzania.
"We accept with honor the trust you have bestowed upon Tanzania by electing us as the Chairman of this leadership council. We will work together to ensure that the African Union becomes a leading example in the legal sector and a model for delivering justice in the years to come," said Dr. Ndumbaro.
Furthermore, Dr. Ndumbaro emphasized the significance of the Technical Committees of Experts in matters of Justice and Law within the African Union. He noted that these committees play a crucial role in reviewing documents from other expert committees to facilitate timely execution of duties, ensuring justice is upheld, and making decisions that are beneficial to the Union.
Dr. Ndumbaro also called upon the elected leaders, including the three Deputy Chairpersons and the Secretary of the Committee, to ensure the implementation of the agreed resolutions by forming a team to facilitate the transfer of agendas to decision-making bodies for the African Union.
This election of Dr. Ndumbaro is seen as a significant milestone in leadership and a source of pride for Tanzania, as it brings a leader who will oversee constitutional and legal matters at the highest level across Africa.
The meeting of the African Union law ministers and legal experts commenced on December 14 and concluded today, December 22, 2024, at the Golden Tulip International Hotel located in Zanzibar.
