Dar es Salaam— Watumishi Housing Investment (WHI) has been honored with the Most Affordable Housing in Africa award by the Africa Union for Housing Finance (AUHF), a recognition endorsed by the African Union. The award highlights WHI’s significant contributions to providing affordable housing solutions for low- and middle-income earners in Tanzania.
The announcement was made by WHI Managing Director, Dr. Fred Msemwa, on October 23, 2024, during a press briefing in Dar es Salaam. He noted that the award was presented at the AUHF’s annual general meeting, recently held in Zanzibar.
“This award is a recognition of WHI’s efforts in facilitating homeownership for Tanzanians, particularly through affordable payment models such as the tenant-buyer scheme and interest-free installment payments during the construction phase,” said Dr. Msemwa.
He explained that these innovative solutions have greatly benefited aspiring homeowners, allowing them to purchase homes priced 10% to 30% below market rates. WHI offers homes starting at 38 million Tanzanian shillings, making homeownership a reality for many.
Dr. Msemwa added, “This accolade comes at a significant time as WHI celebrates a decade of leadership and innovation in Tanzania’s housing sector.”
WHI, a public institution under the Office of the President, Public Service Management, is the first organization in East Africa to receive this prestigious award. The institution emerged as the top contender among several housing sector entities from across Africa.
The AUHF awards recognize institutions making outstanding contributions to the development of affordable housing across the continent. WHI’s success is attributed to its unique approach to designing and implementing housing projects, offering affordable solutions to public servants and members of social security funds.
For over 40 years, AUHF has served as a vital platform connecting housing stakeholders across Africa, promoting the development of more affordable housing options for the continent’s growing population.
