Deputy Minister Dr. Kiruswa urges Rukwa residents to tap into mining opportunities

Rukwa– In a call to action today, October 24, 2024, Deputy Minister for Minerals, Dr. Stephen Kiruswa (pictured) urged the residents of Zimba and Misheni villages in Sumbawanga District, Rukwa Region, to actively participate in the region's booming mining sector. Speaking during a visit to inspect local mining projects, Dr. Kiruswa emphasized the vast opportunities presented by Rukwa’s rich mineral resources and encouraged citizens to apply for small-scale mining licenses.

Highlighting the Sixth Phase Government's commitment under President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, Dr. Kiruswa stressed that ensuring local communities benefit from these resources is a top priority. "Our goal is to see the wealth of resources in Rukwa uplift the people and the nation. I encourage residents to visit the Regional Mining Offices to apply for licenses and receive guidance on how to engage in mining while adhering to laws and regulations," he said.

Dr. Kiruswa noted that boosting local participation in mining would significantly strengthen the region’s economy, create jobs, and improve livelihoods.

In another development, the Deputy Minister called on investors from Noble Helium, currently conducting research for a helium gas project in Rukwa, to foster strong relationships with local communities. "Building cooperative relationships is key to ensuring residents feel the benefits of this project," he urged.

Noble Helium’s Public Relations Manager, Edwin Mremi, assured Dr. Kiruswa that the company has prioritized hiring locals during the research phase and is committed to maintaining good relations with the community.

Meanwhile, Rukwa Region’s Resident Mining Officer, Engineer Joseph Kumburu, revealed that the area identified for mining has the potential to accommodate 718 small-scale mining licenses. He encouraged residents to seize the opportunities available in the region’s mining sector.
